It took a cold-blooded three points from RK Ilagan and an excellent defensive stop of the San Sebastian Staglets to seal its 62-59 victory in overtime over the Letran Squires in an exciting opener of the 90th NCAA Basketball (Juniors Division) on Sunday, June 28 at the San Juan Knights Gym in San Juan City.

The Staglets were enjoying a 3 point margin on the final minute of the game but the Squires fought back with a 4-0 run to take a crucial 59-58 lead with 38 seconds left on the clock in overtime.

After the last time-out of the Staglets, Ilagan launched a three-point shot from the corner with just 24 seconds left in the game to put the Staglets back on top.

Squires got off a hot start with a 15 – 6 lead in the first quarter but Staglets put up a 15-7 run with the help of their captain Jasper Magno and their Power Forward Jeremy Cruz in the 2nd quarter to cut the deficit to 4 at the end of the 1st half. Staglets leaned on their late run in the 3rd period to cut the double-digit lead of the Squires to just 4 points, 37-41. In the 4th period, Squires started off a 6-0 run. A basket from Jasper Magno tied the game at 52 with 13.1 seconds left.

In the overtime period, Staglets and Squires were exchanging baskets, making the ballgame a tight one. However in the last stretched of the OT, Staglets were unstoppable and open their campaign with a 1-0 standing.
