Staglets rout Brigadiers, end first round 5-4

A crucial three-point play basket of Regille Kent Ilagan in the last 34.6 seconds of the 4th quarter gave Emilio Aguinaldo College Brigadiers an upsetting loss, 81-80 on Monday, August 12, 2014 at San Juan Arena. Staglets win over Brigadiers gave them a 5-4 finish at the first round eliminations.

Under 2 minutes remaining in the 4th, Brigadiers led the game by 3 points but Jasneth Cauzon banked on a three-pointer to tie the game at 78 with 1:12 seconds remaining. Evan Montilla of the Brigadiers pulled up a jumper to get back their lead 78-80 with 1:04 left.

Jasper Magno stole the ball from Maui Cruz of the Brigadiers and set up an instant play to Ilagan . He made a strong finish to the basket plus a trip to line, completing a three-point play, 80-81.

An unfortunate turnover by the Brigadiers brought the possession back to the Staglets. Ilagan made his final drive at the 10th second the shot clock but failed to count the basket. Brigadiers still had a chance to score a basket on the other end but couldn’t make one because of the Staglets’ defense.

Both squad exchanged baskets in the first and ended the quarter, 21-all. Brigadiers made a 3 straight three-point baskets to have a 9-point lead, but the Staglets made an 11-2 run to finish the 2nd half, 48-47. Staglets got off a hot start in the 3rd quarter, but the Brigadiers prevailed at the end with a buzzer beater shot from Jose Piopongco, 64-63.
